Searching for your next talented employee is like chasing the Northern Lights

Why it may look so?

Why it may look so?

On a recent trip to Iceland, my wife and I were lucky enough to witness amazing scenes of the Northern Lights. Having done a lot of research prior to our trip, we knew the stars needed to align and the conditions had to be perfect for us to see them. This got me thinking about the search for new employees and how attracting the right talent for our businesses is also about creating the right conditions.

Auroras happen when charged particles (electrons and protons) crash with gases in Earth’s upper atmosphere. Those collisions produce tiny flashes that fill the sky with colourful light. As billions of flashes occur in sequence, the auroras appear to move or “dance” in the sky. Just like an aurora, when searching for a new employee, it is a combination of need and talent colliding, and the perfect selection will help your business accelerate forward.

To be able to see the Northern Lights, the sky needs to be dark and clear of any clouds. Just like chasing your next great hire, you need a clear and concise strategy with coherent objectives for the requirements. Too many businesses don’t spend enough time writing a clear job description with the right requirements for the role. Time is not spent being precise to describe the exact person you need, and rehashing generic wish lists can result in the best person not applying for the role.

The benefits of taking the time to write a comprehensive and transparent job description are that it allows potential candidates to know the expectations of the role and be confident that the skills they have are a match for the job on offer. In turn, this helps your new hire quickly establish structure and discipline within their new role and enables you to manage them efficiently.

Geomagnetic activity (the degree of disturbance of the earth’s magnetic field at the time) and your geographic location. COVID-19 disrupted the traditional work routine. We had a great resignation as companies had to introduce new rules and work processes, leading to drastic changes in the workplace. This has been followed recently by great regret. The Muse “found that 72% experienced shift shock at a new company and 48% would try to get their old job back.

For employers, this disruption has allowed for a great rethink on how to find the perfect candidate to fill a required vacancy in the business. Geographic location is no longer a necessary criterion in the hiring process. Models such as Employer of Record (EOR) have seen an increase in popularity and are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6.9% from 2022 to 2028, caused by ongoing talent shortages propelled by ‘the great resignation’, economic uncertainty, and the formal adoption of ‘work from anywhere’ policies.

Light pollution can render most of the stars and the aurora invisible. Similarly, organisational culture can render your business invisible to potential candidates. Not only is it about comprehensive and transparent job descriptions, but it’s also about the interview process and experience. Every touchpoint with your company needs to be thought through. Having a clear and defined process that enables candidates to progress through the process while remaining informed and adhering to time lines sets you apart from other potential employers. A lot of emphasis is placed by many businesses on hiring the right person.

We all know the challenges and costs associated with hiring the wrong person. As part of the great rethink, businesses need to prioritise their hiring process as equally, if not more, important than serving their best customer or getting that new dream client. Take the time and prioritise your process to ensure that potential candidates don’t render your business invisible.
